Working Hours And Holidays

The normal maximum working hours are eight per day or 48 per week. However, these hours may be increased to nine daily for people working in the retail trade, hotels, restaurants and other such establishments. Similarly, daily working hours may be reduced for difficult or dangerous jobs. Many businesses work on a two-shift system (for example, 8am – 1pm and 4pm – 7pm). As in all Muslim countries, Friday is the weekly day of rest.
In practice, commercial and professional firms work 40-45 hours a week and government ministries about 35. The weekend for office workers has traditionally been Thursday afternoon and Friday (for government office workers, Thursday and Friday), but a number of organizations have changed to a five-day week with Friday and Saturday as the weekend. During the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, normal working hours are reduced by two hours per day.
There are 10 days of public holidays (paid) in any year. The employee’s annual leave is two days for every month if his service is more than six months and less than a year. In every completed year of service after the first, an employee is entitled to 30 days annual paid leave. This is in addition to public holidays, maternity leave for women and sick leave. 1. Penalty for companies in UAE that shut down without settling dues
Dubai: Any company which closes down without settling the dues of those it sponsors will face a penalty by Ministry of Labour, a top official at the Ministry of Labour has said.
The official said that they have listed companies who commit different types of violations and will immediately stop dealing with them until they rectify the violations.
The ministry has outlined four types of grave rule violations which will disqualify an employer from getting work permits and opening a register for setting up a new company or establishment.
The new criteria will come into force late next month and it will state an employer will not be issued the ‘Establishment card’ or issued work permits to recruit employees for his/her company or if the person is part owner of a company.
It will also affect partners in a new company which may have committed the violations in a company they may have previously owned or part owned.
Humaid Bin Deemas Al Suwaidi, Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Affairs said that a notification will be sent to those companies and if they did not respond the ministry will stop issuing work permits for those companies or any companies owned by the same owner starting from next month.
He said that the step came by the ministry in implementation of the decision of Saqr Ghobash Minister of Labour which was issued recently to regulate the procedures for issuance of labour permits and opening the establishment card.
He said the ministry will stop dealing with any other company belonging to the same owner which closed down without settling workers dues. “No deadline will be given to the violators,” he said.
The serious violations include nonpayment of the wages of employees for two months or more, nonpayment of the administrative fines due to the Ministry of Labour for four months, non-issuance or renewal of labour cards of employees for four months from the date the new worker has entered the country or from the expiry date of an existing worker’s card, and non-renewal of the trade licence of the establishment for four months from the date of expiry.
Under the resolution, the suspension of services includes granting of work permits for hiring or bringing in a worker from abroad, issuing a new work permit for an employee to switch to another company, issuing of work permits to employees who are on their parents’ visa, for temporary work, or for doing part-time jobs; and amendment of the information about the violating company in a way that results in altering the names of its owners whose data are registered with the ministry.

  3. Condolence message from Bari & Co Ltd- Business setup provider in Middle East- www.dubaiusinesskey.com
Dubai Business Key weekly newsletter went out yesterday shortly before the sad news of Nelson Mandela’s death.
In these circumstances, we really feel sad on the death of Great Nelson Mandela, he was a lawyer and belong to same community. He spent his life defending human rights and the rule of law. He campaigned for democracy, freedom and equality under the law. There are lawyers around the world who still put their lives on the line to do that.

The Middle East Association (MEA), in support with the British Business Group, will be leading a multi-sector trade mission to the United Arab Emirates, 18th– 23rd January 2014. www.dubaibusinesskey.com

The UAE consists of seven Emirates, each offering opportunities for UK businesses across a wide variety of sectors. Whilst the country’s significant oil and gas reserves play an important role as a source of revenue, the UAE has already successfully reduced its dependence to around 25% of the GDP. The UAE economy is expected to grow around 4.5% annually from 2013-2020 with upturns in both oil and non-oil sectors.
The spectacular growth of Dubai in the past decade has attracted many businesses to the UAE, and this been driven by a proliferation of initiatives and incentives to companies to establish their regional operations there. At the latest count, there are more than 40 Free Trade and Special Enterprise Zones within the UAE, and the purpose of this mission will be to enable delegates to examine a number of these initiatives first-hand and to establish which will be best-suited to their particular business needs. The mission will be based in Dubai, but will travel to Trade Zones in Ras al Khaimah, Sharjah, Jebel Ali and Abu Dhabi during the visit, which will be organised in conjunction with the British Business Groups in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
